12 party workers killed, 425 injured in last three weeks

The Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Surya Kanta Mishra, met Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the State Secretariat here on Friday and expressed concern “over the amount and dimension of the violence” which had been inflicted upon supporters of the Left Front since the results of the Assembly elections were announced three weeks ago.

An 11-member delegation met Ms. Banerjee and apprised her of the incidents occurring across the State, including that 12 supporters and party workers had been killed and 425 grievously injured. Two MLAs of the Left Front and several former MLAs have also faced attacks.

“We are apprehensive of further incidents of violence,” said Mr. Mishra, who is also a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

State Industries Minister Partha Chatterjee, who was present at the meeting, told journalists that the Chief Minister had extended political courtesy by talking to Mr. Mishra and his colleagues. They had submitted a memorandum which was not borne out by facts, he said.

Saying these were stray incidents, the Chief Minister said she wanted specifics, he said. She reportedly said that there should be no differentiation between “us and them” as Trinamool Congress supporters too were being killed, and pointed that any death was unfortunate. Mr. Chatterjee said Ms. Banerjee had told the Left leaders that restoring peace was the prime aim of the government. Asked if they were satisfied with the discussions held, Mr. Mishra said: “There is no question of being satisfied or dissatisfied. We have given our grievances and we will wait for the government to act.”

Apart from the supporters killed or injured in the attacks, more than 7,000 others had been evicted from their homes, Mr. Mishra said. More than 400 party offices had been attacked, five of them set afire. Trinamool supporters had forced an entry into more than 500 offices of trade unions affiliated to the Left, replacing the Red flag with that of the Trinamool”, he said.
