Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): As a result of the State Government's tireless efforts to promote organic farming in Madhya Pradesh, organic agriculture production in the State has risen to 5 lakh MT, about 40 per cent of country's total production.

Cotton, wheat, foodgrains, fruits and vegetables are mainly produced through organic farming in the State.

A study by industry body, Asshocham, said that MP has the potential to produce wealth of `23,000 crore through organic farming. This can generate 60 lakh employment opportunities. In the State, 45 per cent arable land is conducive to organic farming, it added. Also, according to Agriculture and Agriculture Processed Food Export Development Authority (APEDA), only 88 kg per hectare non-organic fertilisers among NPK fertilisers are used in the State, which is much less than the 144 kg per hectare on national average. In MP, 29 lakh hectares of land have been found suitable for organic farming.

The Government is promoting organic farming through programmes of village-to-village contact with farmers about bio-farming and benefits of organic farming.

In Madhya Pradesh, 1565 villages are doing organic farming.

MP holds good possibilities for organic farming. Since the State is the largest organic cotton producer, it has large-scale possibilities for producing organic textile products for Western countries. This will help textile companies and retail companies to export their organic products.

With the increasing awareness towards environment and health, organic food industries are growing by 20 per cent in India. This will provide better opportunities to companies associated with organic food grains including organic oil, food grains, juice, dairy products etc.

Trend of organic pharmacy stores has increased much in western countries and metropolitan cities of India. This has opened up new opportunities for pharma companies.

Notably, demand of organic products is increasing continuously in the world. Organic farming is being done in over 47 lakh hectares in India producing 12.40 lakh MT products. As many as 135 products are exported from India. Their total quantity is 1.94 lakh MT including 16,300 MT organic textiles.

The products are mainly exported to America, European Union, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, South Asian Countries, Middle-East and South Africa. This includes 70 per cent soybean, 6 per cent food grains, 5 processed food products, 4 per cent Basmati rice and remaining items include pulses, dry fruits, spices, sugar, tea etc.

In view of health hazards due to agriculture products grown using chemical fertilisers, demand of organic products is constantly increasing in the world.

America is the biggest market of organic food grains and beverages. On the contrary, maximum organic products are being produced in developing countries. Organic farming industry in the world is worth 63 billion US dollars.
