BENGALURU: Major post-harvest losses of the mango value chain - from farmer to local market -- due to improper handling, transportation, grading, packaging and storage has finally caught the attention of the government, just as the season draws to a close. To stem these losses, the government is now looking to introduce a system of organic certification to increase scientific harvesting and storage of the fruit.

According to the Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation Limited (KSMDMCL), the nodal agency for marketing and sales of the fruit, Karnataka suffers a loss of about 20%-25% of its produce every year. On year-on-year growth, export quality mango production in the country's third largest producer of mangoes came down from 8,568 MT in 2013-14 to 6,795.40 MT in 2015-16.

"In Karnataka, people harvest mangoes by shaking the tree or using sticks. This spoils the fruit when it falls to the ground. The rotten mangoes are then dumped with the remaining good fruit in a large truck or van and taken to yards or cities for sale. When they come to bigger towns and cities, there are no storage facilities, which results in sizeable losses," said MD for KSMDMCL, Kadire Gowda.

It is said that Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh have a much better way of harvesting the fruit - by climbing the trees and delicately snipping the stem and dropping the fruit on to a tarpaulin sheet. This and other modern technologies ensured that despite a low yield, profits are huge as post-production losses are few.

What is the solution?

In order to encourage better harvesting mechanisms and packaging, KSMDMCL has decided to experiment with organic certification for mango orchards. For the first time in the country, the agency is roping in 700 to 800 farmers in nine districts for Global Good Agriculture Practice (GAP) certification. The districts include Kolar, Chikkaballapura, Ramanagara, Tumakuru, Mandya, Dharwad, Koppal, Belagavi and Bengaluru Rural.
