Orissa government today said it was ready for any probe by the Centre into alleged diversion of funds and non-implementation of rural employment guarantee scheme MGNREGA in the state.

This was stated by Orissa's Panchayati Raj minister Prafulla Samal while reacting to the Supreme Court's direction for a Central probe into irregularities in the rural job guarantee scheme in the state.

Noting that the state government had always taken steps to implement any guidelines and court direction while implementing MGNREGA, Samal said his department had already suspended some officials for committing irregularities in the scheme.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court favoured a Central probe into diversion of funds and allegation of non-implementation of MGNREGA in the state.

The SC bench headed by Chief Justice S H Kapadia said this while hearing a PIL filed in 2007 by an NGO Centre for Environment and Food Security alleging large scale corruption in the implementation of the MGNREGA scheme.

Claiming that the state government had appointed ombudsmen in 12 districts to monitor implementation of the scheme, the minister said: "chances of irregularities are more when a big scheme with big budget is being implemented."

However, the state government would not spare anyone found involved in irregularities, Samal said, adding the state government was ready for a central probe.
