JAIPUR: The desert state has recorded an inward migration of 26 lakh against an outward migration of 39 lakh, as per the Census 2011 report on population classified by place of birth and sex, disclosed last week. The deficit of 13 lakh puts Rajasthan in the league of states which are less developed or least attractive for migrants. The figures highlighted that two-third of the inward migration is from Uttar Pradesh (6.15 lakh), Madhya Pradesh (5.63 lakh) and Haryana (5.45 lakh).

These three states constitute for about 17 lakh inward population including 13 lakh females. The inward movement of females in Rajasthan is primarily due to marriages. For instance, the inward migration from UP was 6.15 lakh including 4.17 lakh women. Similarly, 4.57 lakh women migrated from Haryana of the 5.45 lakh total migrated population.

More or less, the inward migration is from the north Indian states while the percentage of inward migration from south Indian states is negligible, with highest being from Tamil Nadu (7,786). Similar is the trend in all north Indian states, except Delhi which has significant representation from all Indian states including Kerela, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh (including Telengana).

The inward migration in Rajasthan from other states is almost on the expected lines. Almost 90% of the migrants from Punjab have settled in Ganganagar and Hanumangarh. Of Jaipur’s 3.32 lakh inward population, over 1.7 lakh came from Uttar Pradesh and 90% of them settled in urban areas. The second highest section of population of 40,000 came from Bihar and Haryana, followed by West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh.
