New Delhi: Over 1,000 unidentified bodies, mostly homeless, have been found in the city till June 7 this year. Interestingly, around 551 such unclaimed corpses were recovered from across the city since April 1.

According to data compiled by Centre of Holistic Development (CHD) a Delhi-based NGO working for homeless a total of 1,012 unidentified dead bodies have been recovered in the city across the 12 police districts since January 24 this year. With the severe heat wave conditions gripping the city, a majority of these staggering numbers of deaths are attributed to the intense weather conditions.

"Most of these are usually homeless people. They are the most vulnerable to extreme weather conditions, crime and other health hazards that eventually result in their deaths. Most deaths occur during the peak winter and summer season," Sunil Kumar Aledia of the CHD said.

The data reveals that the highest number of bodies were recovered in north district, where 240 cases have been recorded since January 24. The area of district where most bodies were found included Kashmere Gate (62), Kotwali (29) and Sabzi Mandi (16).

The north district is followed by crime and railway district with 184 copses. A total of 102 unidentified bodies have been found in the central district, while 72 were recovered in west district.
