CBI has registered more than 200 cases of corruption against government employees, including some senior officials, between January and March this year.

“The CBI has registered 2,439 cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act against public servants including senior officers during the last three years (2007, 2008, 2009) and the current year (upto March 2010),” minister of state for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Prithviraj Chavan told Lok Sabha in a written reply.

A highest of 795 cases were registered last year followed by 744 in 2008 and 688 in 2007, the minister said.

Out of the total of 212 registered cases this year, 48 cases ended in conviction. “Whether a person is guilty or otherwise can only be decided by court after trial,” Chavan said.

Courts have convicted the accused in 230 cases in 2009 as against 216 in 2008 and 238 in 2007, he said.

“Government is fully committed to implement its policy of ‘zero tolerance against corruption’ and is moving progressively to eradicate corruption from all spheres of life by improving transparency and accountability,” Chavan said.

In another written reply, the minister said out of the nine officers belonging to IAS, IPS and IRS and other allied services found to be involved in the Prevention of Corruption Act cases, five were arrested by CBI this year.

Seven officers were arrested last year, two in 2008 and five in 2007, the Minister said.

Chavan said seven requests of CBI under Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946 for undertaking investigation or inquiry against officers of the level of Joint Secretary and above are pending with different ministries.

One request each is pending with ministry of HRD, department of atomic energy, ministry of health and family welfare, cabinet secretariat, ministry of railways, ministry of finance and ministry of coal, Chavan said.

“The individual administrative ministry is required to dispose of such requests in accordance with the provisions of the DSPE Act,” he said.
