The disparity in living conditions in the capital was starkly revealed by the data released in the Delhi Statistical Handbook 2013. According to the handbook, over 30 per cent of Delhi's population lives in one-room dwellings, while three per cent resides in more five-room accommodations.

As per the report, 32.2 per cent of the population - both rural and urban - stays in single-room dwellings followed by 29.6 per cent staying in two-room homes.

The annual survey has also found that over 55 per cent of population have their own accommodation while 32.52 per cent of Delhi residents stay on rent.

While 20 per cent and 10.4 per cent of the population reside in three- and four-room houses, respectively, only 3-4 per cent of the population can afford five-room residences.

The report also reveals an alarming rate of increase in the number of private vehicles in Delhi. According to the handbook 2013, released by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday, the number of vehicles have increased by over two lakh since last year.

The number of cars and jeeps in 2012-13 in Delhi is 24,74,087 and motorcycles and scooters is 49,62,507.

The number of car and jeeps in 2011-12 was 23.43 lakh and 21.73 lakh in 2010-11.

Dikshit said Delhi is the richest state in the country with a per capita income of 2,01,083 in 2012-13 - an increase of 27,397 in comparison to 2011-12.

" An amount of 6,65,679 crore was deposited in 2,847 branches of various banks in Delhi as on March 31, 2012. This reflects prosperity and a sound economic situation in the capital because of proactive economic policies of the Delhi government,'' she said.

Infant mortality rate was the highest last year in Delhi compared to previous five years. According to the Handbook, infant mortality rate in the capital was 23.94 per 1,000 births, between 2008 and 2012. The highest infant mortality rate before this was registered in 2007, when it touched 25.44 per 1,000 births.
