Over 50 per cent sowing of paddy for kharif season done in Chhattisgarh

RAIPUR: Over 50 per cent sowing of paddy crop has been completed for the current kharif season in Chhattisgarh where agriculture experts have advised farmers to cultivate of short and medium duration varieties of rice.

Sowing for paddy crop has been carried out on 19.34 lakh hectares of land so far against the proposed target of 36.42 lakh hectares in the state, known as rice-bowl of the country, an agriculture department official said here.

The sowing of other kharif crops, including maize, arhar, moong, til, sunflower etc, has also expedited with most parts of the state receiving good rainfall now, he said.

The target for maize crops is 2.35 lakh hectares in the state and so far its sowing has been done on 1.03 lakh hectares, as per an official release.

Similarly, sowing of millet, kodo, kutki and other crops has been carried out on 5,270 hectares of land against the prescribed target.

The sowing of pulses has been done on 86,000 hectares of land, including arhar on 46,900 hectares, urad on 32,470 hectares and moong on 6,550 hectares.

The sowing of oilseeds has been done on 1.60 lakh hectares of land in the state. These include groundnut on 22,000 hectares, til on 5,560 hectares and soyabean on 1.32 lakh hectares, the release said, adding that sowing of ramtil, sunflower and arandi is still underway.

The sowing of the fibre rich crops and vegetables has been done against the target of 51,000 hectares, it said.

The state government has set a target of sowing crops on 48.13 lakh hectare of area in this kharif season out of which sowing has been completed in around 23.41 lakh hectares, it said.

Keeping in view the delayed monsoon, agriculture experts have suggested to do cultivation of short and medium term varieties of rice, the release added.
