President Pratibha Patil today announced she will forego the accommodation allotted to her for use after retirement following reports that the land for the house was given in violation of rules.

“Considering the fact that the issue has got linked with the issue of war widows’ accommodation… the President has chosen to forego the aforesaid allotment of accommodation proposed to be made to her as her post-retirement home in Pune,” Rashtrapati Bhavan said in a statement.

Some former defence officers alleged that the bungalow was being built on defence land far in excess of what was sanctioned under rules. Some RTI activists also said the land in Khadki cantonment of Pune could have been given to veterans or war widows.

The controversy broke when Suresh Patil, a retired lieutenant colonel and now member of a Pune-based outfit called Justice for Jawan, released details of the government’s plan to allot the 2.6-lakh sqft plot. He said the house with a plinth area of 4,500sqft was being built for the President by bringing down two British-era bungalows.

Rashtrapati Bhavan said today that there had been no violation of rules.

The statement said the President had been reading and watching fallacious reports about the accommodation. “She chose not to react as she has always held herself answerable to the Constitution of our country and her conscience. It was expected that once the facts were made public, it would convince the concerned people. But despite clarifications given by the President’s secretariat, it is unfortunate that the misgivings continue to persist.”

The statement said what had pained the President most was that she was now being portrayed by some people as one who, by agreeing to accept a defence accommodation for her post-retirement home, was insensitive to the cause of war widows and ex-servicemen.

But facts are to the contrary, the statement said, adding that she has always been proud of the brave jawans who make sacrifices defending our borders.
