The district supply office department will go online with the data on inflow of grains and available stocks in city fair price shops. The new system, brought in as part of modernisation of the public distribution system, is expected to put up the data by December 20.

“We will put up the entire data online on www.mahafdopune.in, and this will enable citizens to check on the available stocks; this will ensure a transparent system of operation,” food distribution officer (FDO) Pradeep Patil said.

There are 1,020 fair price shop owners in the city who are given six kg wheat and one kg rice per customer a month. The city needs 9,000 tonnes of wheat and rice a month for its 10 lakh ration card holders.

Patil said the stocks in all its eight zones — PCMC, Peth areas, Kothrud, Camp, Yerwada, Khadki, City areas and Bibvewadi — would be put up on the website, as against the number of fair price shop owners, their requirement and provision. As the process of distribution of foodgrain directly from the godown has commenced, online entries are made by the godown as well as office of the FDO . “Each data will be entered and immediately uploaded on the website.”

Data pertaining to both BPL and APL card holders will be given separately on the website. Patil said with many bogus ration card holders revealed in the division, the website would ensure a systematic distribution of food grains. Those having complaints can also get back to the FDO by email on pune_fdo@yahoo.com.

Pune had recently witnessed the cancellation of around 32,000 ration cards in rural areas owing to various reasons — incorrect addresses, misuse of facilities for low-income categories and cards in the name of deceased. As many 17 officers from various districts were suspended from services for allotting ration cards to foreign nationals.

The government plans to replace the 2.5 crore ration cards with the unique identification number. These smart cards will have biometric features and can be used only by those whom they are issued to.

While the computerisation of the public distribution system will check black marketing of foodgrain, vehicles carrying PDS stocks will henceforth be painted green and equipped with a global positioning system (GPS).
