THENI: From now on, petitioners in remote villages need not wait in the corridors of district police office or in front of the office of the Deputy Superintendent of Police to hand over petitions or air their grievances. They can meet top district police officers at their doorsteps.

Theni district police administration launched ‘Police Administration Towards People,’ a special meet-the-people-at-their-village programme, at Chinnamanur near here on Saturday.

A team of police officers led by Superintendent of Police R. Balakrishnan started meeting people at their villages to hear grievances and receive petitions for speedy disposal within a stipulated time. While interacting with the people, Mr. Balakrishnan said that most of the offences were due to animosity between communities or castes. Other offences that affected the society were gambling, ganja cultivation and illegal distillation of liquor.

Quoting Idukki DIG’s statement at an inter-State meeting held in Theni recently, he said police in both States were informed that ganja produced in Theni and Idukki districts were mixed with ganja from other States to develop a new blend to improve quality. Later, it was despatched to other parts of the country. Even though 99 per cent of ganja cultivation had been destroyed, the name earned by Theni as a place for ganja cultivation was till prevalent.

“We should strive hard to make the district cent per cent ganja-free. To achieve this, participation of community and its effective coordination with the police are very vital,” he said.

The SP also advised the public to pass on information about any offences, including cultivation of ganja, to the police to enable them to act swiftly. Secrecy would be maintained about the information as well as the informants.

Similar meetings and interactions would be extended to other parts of the district in a phased manner, he added.

People at Thadicherry, Upparpatti, Vadapudhupatti, Kamayagoundenpatti, Kokilapuram, Anamalaiaynpatti and Surulipatti under the jurisdiction of seven police stations in Uthamapalayam sub-division took part in the programme in which 55 petitions were received. Both the SP and DSPs also listened to the grievances of the people.
