New Delhi: Academic degrees and certificates are set to go digital.

Union human resource development minister Prakash Javadekar today revived a UPA initiative aimed at setting up a national academic depository to provide degrees and diplomas in a digital format.

Javadekar, however, dressed up the initiative as a brainchild of the NDA government, saying the depository was a step towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Digital India vision. Unlike the UPA's decision to set up the depository by an act of Parliament, the NDA government is set to do it through an executive order.

The ministry said the proposed depository would be a round-the-clock facility that would help validate authenticity of awards and ensure safe storage and easy retrieval. Students can use Aadhaar cards or other details to register, while academic institutions can upload records after digitally signing them.

If an employer requests a verification of a candidate's certificate, the depository will notify the person concerned by email or a text message.

A former ministry official expressed doubts about the initiative taking the executive route. "If private universities and private deemed universities don't participate in the NAD, the government or the UGC hardly have any power to ensure their participation. Most private institutions don't get funds from the UGC," the official said.
