The family of murdered RTI activist Satish Shetty today alleged that the police did little to nab the “real culprits” during the months they investigated the murder. This “inaction”, younger brother Sandeep Shetty said, has emboldened land sharks, citing as a case in point Sunday's attack on an associate of Shetty in Talegaon, the very place where Shetty had been murdered on January 13 last year.

The case has since been taken over by the CBI, but the family was targeting the police for the way they carried out investigations till July. Sandeep Shetty said those the police caught are “least suspected” in the murder. “I don't know whether those arrested are involved in the murder or not. That is for the court to find out. But I think the real culprits have not been caught yet. I mentioned this in the affidavit I filed in the Bombay High Court last year,” said Sandeep Shetty, 39.

Sandeep said a month before the murder, his brother had submitted a complaint to the rural police about the threats to his life. “Satish had named some people from whom he feared a threat to his life. He had named these persons, yet nothing has been done. These people have neither been arrested nor called for investigation which speaks of the government's seriousness,” he said.

When contacted, deputy superintendent of police Shrikrishna Kokate said, “The CBI was investigating the case. It has already filed an FIR.”

The CBI is yet to file a chargesheet, said advocate Gorakshanath Kale, counsel for prime suspect Vijay Dabhade, a lawyer, arrested on January 15. Dabhade used to be the counsel for a builder in Talegaon. Shetty had alleged that Dabhade built a bungalow on land belonging to the railways and ran a campaign against him.

Sandeep Shetty accused the government of having failed to investigate the land scams his brother had exposed. He said he had submitted an affidavit in the High Court, giving details of the RTI applications made by Satish and the information he received. “His RTI applications had exposed government land irregularities, land grabbing, illegal registration of lands and forest land scams on a massive scale. All these details, including the names of people, companies, promoters and government officials involved in the shady deals, were forwarded to the government,” he said.

The High Court, said Sandeep, had in March directed the state to investigate all those points and people mentioned in the affidavit. “But there was no movement from the state government. No official, no minister or any personnel from the government came to us and asked us any relevant questions,” Sandeep said, expressing doubts that some government officials had been involved with the land sharks.

RTI activists Manav Kamble and Maruti Bhapkar agreed the state had been inactive and felt this pointed to a conspiracy to eliminate Satish with the possible involvement of government officials.

The Talegaon police have made no headway in their investigations into the attack on RTI activist Arun Mane on Sunday. “We have found no clue so far. Neither has Mane provided any clue about the attackers,” says police inspector Sanjay Nikam.
