The 32-member gang has been involved in 15 cases

Move to invoke Act comes after killing of Nashik Additional Collector

The police have booked a 32-member sand mafia from Nevasa taluk under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). This is the first time the Act has been invoked against a sand mafia in the State, Ahmednagar Superintendent of Police Krishna Prakash told The Hindu.

The mafia, led by the absconding Anna Lashkare, has been involved in many cases, the most prominent being the firing on taluk magistrate Dadasaheb Gite on August 16, 2010. Mr. Gite had gone to seize vehicles which were used for illegal sand dealings, when he was manhandled and fired upon. The gang even threatened to set his vehicle on fire, Mr. Prakash said on the phone.

The gang, which included Ashok Upalkar, Altaf Patel and Asif Pathan, was involved in 15 cases, he said. Lashkare is believed to be the kingpin.

Mr. Prakash said the accused would be caught soon.

The police move to slap the MCOCA on the gang comes within a week of the killing of Additional District Collector Yashwant Sonawane, who was burnt alive by a kerosene mafia in Nashik district. The State has witnessed a series of raids after the incident. Many leaders have asked that the MCOCA be used against the accused in the Sonawane murder case. The Ahmednagar police have promised that illegal sand dealings would be curbed.

However, in another case involving the sand mafia here, the wife of a slain government employee is still awaiting justice. Aafia Sayyad's husband Salim Sayyad, 35, who worked for a honorarium in the tehsil office of Srigonda taluk, was crushed under a tractor on February 8, 2009 allegedly by a gang that was illegally mining sand from the Ghod river bed. Sayyad, a class IV government employee, had gone there to stop the illegal activity when he was killed.

While monetary help has been difficult to come by for Aafia, the trial of the accused Vikas Pachpute is still on.
