The anti-politician tirade at the venue of Anna Hazare’s fast is likely to prompt an indignant political class to close ranks and take on social activists in the coming days.

Many Opposition leaders who had initially rejoiced when Hazare’s movement cornered the government are now backing the Centre to take a firm stand against the “unreasonable” demands from activists.

At a recent meeting with Pranab Mukherjee, key Opposition leaders had asked the government not to concede the activists’ demand for chairmanship of the joint draft committee for the Lok Pal Bill.

The Jantar Mantar crowd had shouted slogans like “gali gali me shor hai, saare politician chor hain (the cry on the streets is: every politician is a thief)”. Politicians like Janata Dal (United) president Sharad Yadav and former BJP leader Uma Bharti were booed when they came to express solidarity with Hazare.

Keeping in mind the popular mood, most politicians have refrained from criticising the activists or the protest crowd on record. However, two MPs, the Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Raghuvansh Prasad Singh and the Samajwadi Party’s Mohan Singh, have publicly questioned the activists’ right to castigate all politicians.

“The issue was good but their method was fascist. In a democracy, laws are enacted by Parliament and not NGOs. They are trying to imply that only NGOs are honest and that all politicians are corrupt,” Mohan Singh said.

Raghuvansh criticised the way some of Hazare’s followers had snubbed visiting politicians and said they were trying to “dictate terms” in a manner unacceptable in a democracy.

Sharad Yadav too felt that the attack on politicians across the board had been unfair.

“After all, it’s the politicians who have turned corruption into such a big issue. The Opposition fought in Parliament and on the streets to make the people aware about the various scams,” he said.

Criticism came also from Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah. He tweeted that people’s power was not just “3 nights of candles & music”, and that he was amused “to see the sort of people trying to jump on the Hazare bandwagon”.

Some politicians feel that Hazare’s followers were emboldened by the way experts and activists from the Sonia Gandhi-headed National Advisory Council often try to intervene in government policy.
