Unperturbed over the stiff protest against the proposed Posco steel plant, the Orissa government on Tuesday said it would start project-related work in areas already acquired in Jagatsinghpur district. The government, however, suspended further land acquisition for the time being.

"We have already acquired 1,800 acres of land for the proposed plant near Paradip and are beginning project-related work in the area already acquired," said chief secretary B K Patnaik. He said preliminary work such as cleaning and levelling of the land are being taken up now to make the area fit for the construction of the Rs 52,000-crore mega project.

Announcing a temporary halt to further land acquisition, additional district magistrate (Paradip) Sarojkant Choudhury said: "We will focus on preparing acquired land for construction of the steel plant."

Patnaik said the government will renew the MoU with Posco by June 30, which expired a year ago in June 2010. "We are examining the opinions of various departments raised about the MoU. Chief minister Naveen Patnaik will take a decision soon," he said.

The ADM said the foundation stone was laid for a rehabilitation colony for displaced people near Polanga and Noliasahi in Gadakujang gram panchayat. The foundation stone was also laid for construction of boundary walls around the land that mostly housed betel vines in the area amid tight security, he said.

The development coincided with a visit of senior Left party leaders to the agitation ground in Dhinkia panchayat, extending support to the anti-project agitators.

Talking to the protestors, Basudev Acharya, CPM MP and leader of the party in Lok Sabha, said the state government should initiate a dialogue with the farmers. "The Palli Sabhas should have been taken into confidence before initiating any project on agricultural land. The farmers have the right to know what is being done with their land. If the state government has any faith left in democracy, it should talk to them," he said.

Farmers were united in the struggle against creation of special economic zones or setting up of industries on agricultural land in any part of the country, he said.

CPI leader and MP Gurudas Dasgupta said depriving the farmers of their resources and means of livelihood by invoking colonial laws is not acceptable. "We will continue our struggle against the anti-farmer policies of the state government and win it," he said.
