Tension prevailed in the area selected for the proposed mega steel plant of Posco in Orissa's Jagatsinghpur district on Sunday as villagers opposing the project came out to vent their anger against the State government for trying to mislead the Union Ministry of Environment Forests about the implementation of the Forest Rights Act in their locality.

Participating in a public rally at Balitutha, the entry point to the Site, demarcated for the project, the villagers took a vow to intensify their agitation against land acquisition for the project if the State government submitted a false report to the Centre stating that no family lived or depended on the hundreds of acres of forest land that came under the Posco site.

The rally, which was organised by the Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS), was attended by leaders of several Opposition parties, including the Congress, the Communist Party of India(Marxist), the Communist Party of India, the Forward Bloc, the Samajwadi Party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal, the CPI(M-L), and the CPI(M-L) New Democracy. Leaders of several mass movements also took part in the rally.

Addressing the gathering, PPSS leader Abhay Sahu blamed the State government and the Jagatsinghpur district administration for trying their best to create division among the agitating villagers and creating a sense of fear among the protesters by deployment of large number of armed policemen in the area. A PPSS activist was arrested on Saturday without any reason, he added.

Reiterating the PPSS demand that they would not allow acquisition of any land for the Posco steel project, Mr. Sahu said, the State government should refrain from violating the laws of the land with the sole aim of helping a foreign company.

Odisha Jana Sammilani president Rabi Das said that the State government should not violate the Forest Rights Act and other laws and also respect the provisions of the Constitution before going ahead with the land acquisition for the controversial project.

Social activist Prafulla Samantara appealed to the agitating locals to stay united to save their land and sources of livelihood by preventing land acquisition in the locality.

Meanwhile, the locals who are supporting the project also held a parallel meeting in a nearby village and urged the government to take necessary steps to facilitate implementation of the project.
