‘The Indian farm area under organic likely to grow'

To commemorate tenth anniversary of the implementation of National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP), a “National Conference-India Organic 2000-2010” was held here over the weekend in which the growth of organic movement across the country was highlighted.

Speaking on the occasion, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) advisor Dr. P.V.S.M. Gauri said the Indian farm area under organic was likely to grow. “There is worldwide acknowledgement of the Indian organic logo. It is important to encourage organic farming because it is environment-friendly and specially at a time when discussions are around the subject of climate change,” she added.

Acknowledging that there were number of challenges to popularise organic farming, Dr. Gauri said extending support to small farmer groups was the need of the hour. “There should be zero tolerance in certificate system. India can become the number one organic hub in the world in the next ten years through total market acceptance of the Indian organic brand. We are moving towards greater credibility by framing more stringent standards of quality management.”

Stating that India was on the threshold of development in organic agriculture, Morarka Organic Foods CEO Mukesh Gupta said the organic sector was flourishing today at a much higher pace than ever before. “The world is now progressively becoming more aware about the need to preserve nature. Globally, the organic products are swiftly replacing synthetic and chemically produced products.”

The conference also highlighted that India has the distinction of being the first country to have introduced grower group certification at the national level to cover small farmers and the NPOP standards of India were recognised by European Union, Switzerland and the United States. On the occasion APEDA also launched “Tracenet”, a web-based traceability system for organic products with the help of service providers and consultation with all stakeholders.
