NEW DELHI: Private players have placed orders to import around 7,000 tonnes of onions, while the government leaned on a public sector company to ship the key kitchen ingredient to beat the domestic shortage. The moves came even as the food and consumer affairs ministry said it will seek export curbs if prices did not ease in a fortnight.

Senior government officials said Project Export Corporation was on Friday asked to import onions even as private players have approached the National Plant Protection Office to meet the quarantine requirements on agricultural imports.

Although the government was earlier looking to get onions from China, Iran and Malaysia, Pakistan is expected to be the likely source given that it is seen as the fastest source for imports. "We won't be able to get onions within seven-eight days from China or Malaysia," said an officer familiar with the developments.

The situation will be reviewed on Sunday when food and consumer affairs minister K V Thomas meets agriculture minister Sharad Pawar. Thomas said his ministry may push for temporary restriction on onion exports as the final option if prices don't soften in the next fortnight. Commerce and agricultural ministries have so far opposed a ban on imports and even Thomas acknowledged that.

"Already the minimum export price (MEP) has been decided (and fixed at $650 a tonne). We will see how there is controlled export and import of onion to meet our demand during this lean season," Thomas told TOI over the phone. Further checks on exports would be a political decision considering increasing demand from states such as Delhi, Odisha and Gujarat.

Although government officials said that prices had started softening in mandis with a decrease of Rs 2-3 a kg seen in parts of Maharashtra, data available with the consumer affairs ministry showed otherwise. For instance, in Delhi, the wholesale price was estimated at Rs 3,750 a quintal on Friday, the same as Tuesday. In most other cities too, prices held up, while in Ahmedabad, Lucknow and Patna, there was an increase compared to Wednesday, the data showed. A marginal decrease was seen in Gwalior, Mumbai and Cuttack.

Wholesale price of onion at Chalisgaon mandi in Maharashtra was Rs 3,300 per quintal while at Jalgaon it was Rs 3,800 and at Surat the price was Rs 3,875.

In the retail market, the maximum variation was reported in Agra where onion prices doubled in the past four days - from Rs 30 on Tuesday to Rs 60 on Friday. The retail onion price was the lowest in Nagpur at Rs 25 per kg. Maximum fall in prices - Rs 10 per kg - was reported from Ludhiana.
