They set deadline for removing fuel assemblies in KKNPP complex

Anti-Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project protesters will lay siege to the upcoming nuclear complex with their family members if works were resumed, and intensify the protest if fuel assemblies stored in the KKNPP complex were not removed before December 31, struggle committee convener S.P. Udayakumar has warned.

The deadline has been in the wake of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's announcement in Moscow that works at the KKNPP site would commence in a couple of weeks.

An emergency meeting was convened at Idinthakarai where a relay fast has been going on for the past 61 days against the KKNPP.

Speaking amidst the protesters, who gathered in front of St. Lourdes Church after the meeting, Dr. Udayakumar said the Manmohan Singh-led Government at the Centre, which had “failed to save Tamils during the Sri Lankan ethnic struggle, prevent the ongoing attacks on Tamil fishermen and understand even the rationale behind the Tamils' continuing struggle against KKNPP,” was playing into the hands of multi-national companies.

Hence, he had announced in Moscow that the works at KKNPP would commence in a couple of weeks.

Condemning the decision, the agitators would take out a protest rally from Idinthakarai to Radhapuram via Sri Bathrakaliamman Temple at Kudankulam on Sunday (December 18).

Dr. Udayakumar said that the anti-KKNPP protest committee would initiate legal proceedings against Union Minister V. Narayanasamy for his observations that money from foreign sources had reached the anti-KKNPP protesters through six non-governmental organisations.

Struggle committee sources said the protest venue would be shifted to the S.S. Puram intersection as it was done earlier if the fuel assemblies were not removed before December 31.

“The protesters will start a fast-unto-death at the S.S. Puram intersection,” a source said.

Permission for rally

Anti-KKNPP struggle committee member K. Sivasubramanian has submitted a petition seeking police permission for taking out the December 18 protest rally. However, the police have not given permission for the rally.
