The public hearing held here to elicit the opinion of tribal people of various villages under Sarugudu panchayat of Nathavaram mandal in Visakhapatnam district, on the proposed laterite mining project, passed off peacefully on Thursday.

The police, who were present in large numbers, and the officials were at ease as the project proponents seemed to have brainwashed the people located on the hills on the benefits that would accrue to them from the project. This was evident from the way these villagers booed down whenever someone tried to speak against the project.

A few of the project supporters occupied chairs in the front row and prompted those sitting in the crowd to boo down those speaking against the project while applauding those who supported it.

The eight hamlets lack basic amenities like roads and safe drinking water. Villagers contract various diseases and are forced to carry sick patients up and down the hill slopes. The absence of a road made a contractor to back out from undertaking a water project in the past. “Let them build a bomb factory, we don't bother. All we want is a road,” said a youth reflecting the anger of the tribals. Former MLA and CPI leader G. Demudu wanted the government to find a permanent solution to the problems being faced by the villages. But he did not spell out his stand on the project. Those opposing the project allege that the leaseholder and those behind him are trying to mislead tribal people with false promises. The public hearing must be cancelled as the proposed project is located in a Scheduled Area, they demanded, and alleged that the applicant who was given the lease was a non-tribal. Joint Collector M. Girija Sankar said that all the concerns expressed by the tribal people would be taken to the notice of the government. “A detailed enquiry is needed into some of the allegations made by those who opposed the mining project,” he said when asked by the media after the meeting. Earlier, Mr. Sankar was held up at Sarugudu village, at the foothill of the project area, for about an hour by those opposing laterite mining. He took their representations and assured them that they would be considered.
