                            <br /><div align="justify">Superintendent of police (Pune rural) Sandeep Karnik, who was in charge of security during the Maval agitation on August 9 in which three farmers died in police firing, has written to director general of police Ajit Parasnis seeking a transfer, according to reliable sources. <br /><br />Karnik sent the letter on Tuesday, the sources said, adding that the officer wants to be moved out as he believes people may misread his continuance in his present posting as a hindrance to the probe into the police firing. <br /><br />However, when contacted, Karnik refused to comment. His superior, special inspector general of police (Kolhapur range) Tukaram Chavan, when contacted, said he was in a meeting and would call later. <br /><br />The farmers had blocked the Pune-Mumbai expressway to protest against the proposed water pipeline project from the Pawana dam to Pimpri-Chinchwad. <br /><br />Three farmers were killed and 44 policemen and 14 others were injured in the firing. Five farmers were arrested and Karnik suspended six constables over the incident. It was only later that the state home department suspended two police officers (an inspector and a sub-inspector) for firing on the agitators. <br /><br />Three more farmers were subsequently arrested while 21 farmers obtained interim anticipatory bail fearing arrest. The police also identified 42 &quot;conspirators&quot;. <br /><br />Meanwhile, a private criminal case has been filed by social activist Rupali Patil in the magistrate's court here seeking that Karnik and other policemen be tried on murder charges. Patil has also asked that the case, which is being handled by the rural police, be handed over to the CBI. Arguments in the case were heard on Wednesday and the court will pass its order on September 5.</div>

                            <br /><div align="justify">Superintendent of police (Pune rural) Sandeep Karnik, who was in charge of security during the Maval agitation on August 9 in which three farmers died in police firing, has written to director general of police Ajit Parasnis seeking a transfer, according to reliable sources. <br /><br />Karnik sent the letter on Tuesday, the sources said, adding that the officer wants to be moved out as he believes people may misread his continuance in his present posting as a hindrance to the probe into the police firing. <br /><br />However, when contacted, Karnik refused to comment. His superior, special inspector general of police (Kolhapur range) Tukaram Chavan, when contacted, said he was in a meeting and would call later. <br /><br />The farmers had blocked the Pune-Mumbai expressway to protest against the proposed water pipeline project from the Pawana dam to Pimpri-Chinchwad. <br /><br />Three farmers were killed and 44 policemen and 14 others were injured in the firing. Five farmers were arrested and Karnik suspended six constables over the incident. It was only later that the state home department suspended two police officers (an inspector and a sub-inspector) for firing on the agitators. <br /><br />Three more farmers were subsequently arrested while 21 farmers obtained interim anticipatory bail fearing arrest. The police also identified 42 &quot;conspirators&quot;. <br /><br />Meanwhile, a private criminal case has been filed by social activist Rupali Patil in the magistrate's court here seeking that Karnik and other policemen be tried on murder charges. Patil has also asked that the case, which is being handled by the rural police, be handed over to the CBI. Arguments in the case were heard on Wednesday and the court will pass its order on September 5.</div>

                            <br /><div align="justify">Superintendent of police (Pune rural) Sandeep Karnik, who was in charge of security during the Maval agitation on August 9 in which three farmers died in police firing, has written to director general of police Ajit Parasnis seeking a transfer, according to reliable sources. <br /><br />Karnik sent the letter on Tuesday, the sources said, adding that the officer wants to be moved out as he believes people may misread his continuance in his present posting as a hindrance to the probe into the police firing. <br /><br />However, when contacted, Karnik refused to comment. His superior, special inspector general of police (Kolhapur range) Tukaram Chavan, when contacted, said he was in a meeting and would call later. <br /><br />The farmers had blocked the Pune-Mumbai expressway to protest against the proposed water pipeline project from the Pawana dam to Pimpri-Chinchwad. <br /><br />Three farmers were killed and 44 policemen and 14 others were injured in the firing. Five farmers were arrested and Karnik suspended six constables over the incident. It was only later that the state home department suspended two police officers (an inspector and a sub-inspector) for firing on the agitators. <br /><br />Three more farmers were subsequently arrested while 21 farmers obtained interim anticipatory bail fearing arrest. The police also identified 42 &quot;conspirators&quot;. <br /><br />Meanwhile, a private criminal case has been filed by social activist Rupali Patil in the magistrate's court here seeking that Karnik and other policemen be tried on murder charges. Patil has also asked that the case, which is being handled by the rural police, be handed over to the CBI. Arguments in the case were heard on Wednesday and the court will pass its order on September 5.</div>

Pune rural SP Karnik seeks transfer by Asseem Shaikh

Superintendent of police (Pune rural) Sandeep Karnik, who was in charge of security during the Maval agitation on August 9 in which three farmers died in police firing, has written to director general of police Ajit Parasnis seeking a transfer, according to reliable sources. Karnik sent the letter on Tuesday, the sources said, adding that the officer wants to be moved out as he believes people may misread his continuance in his present posting as a hindrance to the probe into the police firing. However, when contacted, Karnik refused to comment. His superior, special inspector general of police (Kolhapur range) Tukaram Chavan, when contacted, said he was in a meeting and would call later. The farmers had blocked the Pune-Mumbai expressway to protest against the proposed water pipeline project from the Pawana dam to Pimpri-Chinchwad. Three farmers were killed and 44 policemen and 14 others were injured in the firing. Five farmers were arrested and Karnik suspended six constables over the incident. It was only later that the state home department suspended two police officers (an inspector and a sub-inspector) for firing on the agitators. Three more farmers were subsequently arrested while 21 farmers obtained interim anticipatory bail fearing arrest. The police also identified 42 "conspirators". Meanwhile, a private criminal case has been filed by social activist Rupali Patil in the magistrate's court here seeking that Karnik and other policemen be tried on murder charges. Patil has also asked that the case, which is being handled by the rural police, be handed over to the CBI. Arguments in the case were heard on Wednesday and the court will pass its order on September 5.
