Ludhiana: Six peasant bodies in Punjab on Monday said they would walk out of the ongoing 10-day farmers' strike across several states following reports about minor clashes between some protesters and milkmen over the past two days.

The associations said they would discontinue their participation in the June 1-10 agitation from Wednesday onwards to avoid dispute.

"The protests have been peaceful so far. In several places farmers set up shops to sell vegetables directly to consumers, a move that benefited everyone involved.

"However, to avoid any dispute between suppliers and farmers, we have decided to end our protest in Punjab on June 6," Balbir Singh Rajewal of the Bharatiya Kisan Union said in Ludhiana.

The others that have decided to call off their strike are the Bharatiya Kisan Union Lakhowal, Bharatiya Kisan Union Kadian, Bharatiya Kisan Union Sidhupur, the Progressive Dairy Farmers Association and the Indian Farmers Association.

As many as 172 peasants' bodies across northern and western India have decided not to sell their produce to cities from June 1 to 10.

Farmers have been dumping their produce on highways, demanding a higher minimum support price and loan waivers.

The Congress has supported the strike and party chief Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to address a rally in Mandsaur on June 6, the first anniversary of the death of six farmers in police firing in the Madhya Pradesh district. The state faces Assembly polls later this year.

The decision by the Punjab organisations to call off the strike has come in the backdrop of escalating tensions between farmers and milk suppliers in the state.
