RAJKOT/AHMEDABAD: Just a week ago, lakhs of farmers across Gujarat were on the verge of losing their standing crop due to a prolonged dry spell. However, five days of incessant rainfall has come as a saviour.

Agriculturists say that the wet spell at the fag end of monsoon will now help their kharif crops survive.

The rains have resulted in 80 big and small dams, especially in Saurashtra, overflowing, thereby easing water availability for irrigation even if monsoon retreats now.

Kamlesh Patel, a farmer in Rupavati village near Rajkot, said, "We were struggling to salvage cotton sown in 13 bighas and groundnut in seven bighas. However, five days of rainfall has come as a major succor. We won't need to pump out water from deep borewells now."

Saurashtra, which is one of the biggest producers of cotton and groundnut in the country, has received 88% of its average annual rainfall with 15% coming in just last five days.

Sowing in the state as a whole has been completed in 99 per cent of the average area under cultivation of 85.83 lakh hectares.

A V Barad, dean of Junagadh Agriculture University (JAU) said, "Earlier we had estimated that a major chunk of the standing crop would be destroyed due to lack of water. However, the latest spell of rains has saved these crops."

Groundnut has been sown in 94.60 % of the total sowing area of 13.69 lakh hectares, while cotton has been sown on entire 27.61 lakh hectares.

"This rainfall will recharge groundwater and watershed projects which will help save our crops," said Manskukh Savaliya, a farmer in Amreli.
