NEW DELHI: The season's rainfall deficit contracted to 2% from 6% in a day on Monday. The weather office has forecast heavy showers in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and t parts of east in the next 24 hours.

This could speed up planting of i paddy, oilseeds, coarse cereals, cotton, sugarcane and pulses. Monday's rainfall, 14.8 mm, was 74% higher than normal, as monsoon reached new areas in Gujarat and Rajasthan. The normal date for monsoon to cover the entire country is July 15.

Rainfall was particularly heavy in Jharkhand at 431% above normal, followed by east Rajasthan at 293% and central Maharashtra at 271% on Monday. This will speed up planting of crops including paddy, soyabean, pulses and oilseeds.

India Meteorological Department (IMD), which regards seasonal shortfall of more than 10% as deficient, said heavy rain is expected in Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and northeast India over the next 3-4 days.

This will increase the flow of water in rivers and increase the level in reservoirs which has stagnated at 15% of capacity in the past two weeks.

In the country's 91 major water reservoirs, levels were at less than 15% of their combined capacity at 23.94 billion cubic metre, the Central Water Commission said on June 30.

Planting of crops has accelerated, but it is still lagging behind by 23% at 21.59 million hectare from the level reached last year, when rainfall was about 20% above normal towards the end of June before drought-like conditions set it.
