After a gap of several years, the district faces the bleak prospect of losing the chance to take up sowing of green and black grams, soyabean and sesame this year because of inordinate delay in the onset of the monsoon.</p><p style="text-align: justify">As per the details available with the Agriculture Department on Monday, farmers have completed sowing only in four per cent of the targeted area and most of the sowing took place on irrigated land. Out of the total 25,304 hectares where sowing has been completed, nearly 24,000 hectares is covered by sugarcane; the short-duration crops like green and black gram have been sown only on 750 hectares.</p><p style="text-align: justify"><em>Seed procurement</em></p><p style="text-align: justify">According to the Agriculture officials, farmers hardly have around 10 days to complete the sowing of green and black grams and soyabeans and oilseeds sesame. Agriculture activities have come to a standstill in all the seven taluks in the district because of the failure of the rains. Farmers in the hope of taking up early sowing of soyabeans had procured certified seeds and were waiting for the onset of the monsoon. The Agriculture Department had to procure the seeds from neighbouring districts and from farmers.</p><p style="text-align: justify">As against the target of 38,000 hectares fixed for black grams, sowing has been completed only on 214 hectares. Similarly as against the target of just over 20,000 hectares, the sowing has been completed on 536 hectares. The sowing of soyabean crop has also been very low: against the target of 14,000 hectares, sowing has been completed only on 187 hectares.</p><p style="text-align: justify">As per the present indications there is no possibility of farmers achieving the targets fixed for green, and black grams, sesame and soyabeans this year. The unsown area is likely to shift to red gram, for which farmers have time till the first week of August to complete the sowing, and to sunflower. The sowing of sunflower extends up to rabi season. After a gap of several years, the district faces the bleak prospect of losing the chance to take up sowing of green and black grams, soyabean and sesame this year because of inordinate delay in the onset of the monsoon.</p><p style="text-align: justify">As per the details available with the Agriculture Department on Monday, farmers have completed sowing only in four per cent of the targeted area and most of the sowing took place on irrigated land. Out of the total 25,304 hectares where sowing has been completed, nearly 24,000 hectares is covered by sugarcane; the short-duration crops like green and black gram have been sown only on 750 hectares.</p><p style="text-align: justify"><em>Seed procurement</em></p><p style="text-align: justify">According to the Agriculture officials, farmers hardly have around 10 days to complete the sowing of green and black grams and soyabeans and oilseeds sesame. Agriculture activities have come to a standstill in all the seven taluks in the district because of the failure of the rains. Farmers in the hope of taking up early sowing of soyabeans had procured certified seeds and were waiting for the onset of the monsoon. The Agriculture Department had to procure the seeds from neighbouring districts and from farmers.</p><p style="text-align: justify">As against the target of 38,000 hectares fixed for black grams, sowing has been completed only on 214 hectares. Similarly as against the target of just over 20,000 hectares, the sowing has been completed on 536 hectares. The sowing of soyabean crop has also been very low: against the target of 14,000 hectares, sowing has been completed only on 187 hectares.</p><p style="text-align: justify">As per the present indications there is no possibility of farmers achieving the targets fixed for green, and black grams, sesame and soyabeans this year. The unsown area is likely to shift to red gram, for which farmers have time till the first week of August to complete the sowing, and to sunflower. The sowing of sunflower extends up to rabi season. Agriculture Department officials said so far the sowing of foodgrain crops has been completed only on 965 hectares as against the target of more than 4.55 lakh hectares fixed for the kharif season. The sowing of the oilseeds has also been very low: as against the target of 54,800 hectares, sowing has been completed only on 197 hectares.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><div style="text-align: justify"><em><br /></em></div><div style="text-align: justify"><em>Farmers completed sowing in four p.c. of targeted area</em></div><p>&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align: justify"><em>Sowing of foodgrain crops completed only on 965 ha</em></p>

After a gap of several years, the district faces the bleak prospect of losing the chance to take up sowing of green and black grams, soyabean and sesame this year because of inordinate delay in the onset of the monsoon.</p><p style="text-align: justify">As per the details available with the Agriculture Department on Monday, farmers have completed sowing only in four per cent of the targeted area and most of the sowing took place on irrigated land. Out of the total 25,304 hectares where sowing has been completed, nearly 24,000 hectares is covered by sugarcane; the short-duration crops like green and black gram have been sown only on 750 hectares.</p><p style="text-align: justify"><em>Seed procurement</em></p><p style="text-align: justify">According to the Agriculture officials, farmers hardly have around 10 days to complete the sowing of green and black grams and soyabeans and oilseeds sesame. Agriculture activities have come to a standstill in all the seven taluks in the district because of the failure of the rains. Farmers in the hope of taking up early sowing of soyabeans had procured certified seeds and were waiting for the onset of the monsoon. The Agriculture Department had to procure the seeds from neighbouring districts and from farmers.</p><p style="text-align: justify">As against the target of 38,000 hectares fixed for black grams, sowing has been completed only on 214 hectares. Similarly as against the target of just over 20,000 hectares, the sowing has been completed on 536 hectares. The sowing of soyabean crop has also been very low: against the target of 14,000 hectares, sowing has been completed only on 187 hectares.</p><p style="text-align: justify">As per the present indications there is no possibility of farmers achieving the targets fixed for green, and black grams, sesame and soyabeans this year. The unsown area is likely to shift to red gram, for which farmers have time till the first week of August to complete the sowing, and to sunflower. The sowing of sunflower extends up to rabi season. Agriculture Department officials said so far the sowing of foodgrain crops has been completed only on 965 hectares as against the target of more than 4.55 lakh hectares fixed for the kharif season. Rains play truant; sowing target to be missed

-The Hindu   Agriculture activities come to a standstill in Gulbarga Karnataka: It has been an agonising wait for farmers in Gulbarga district. After a gap of several years, the district faces the bleak prospect of losing the chance to take up sowing of green and black grams, soyabean and sesame this year because of inordinate delay in the onset of the monsoon. As per the details available with the Agriculture Department on Monday, farmers have completed sowing only in four per cent of the targeted area and most of the sowing took place on irrigated land. Out of the total 25,304 hectares where sowing has been completed, nearly 24,000 hectares is covered by sugarcane; the short-duration crops like green and black gram have been sown only on 750 hectares. Seed procurement According to the Agriculture officials, farmers hardly have around 10 days to complete the sowing of green and black grams and soyabeans and oilseeds sesame. Agriculture activities have come to a standstill in all the seven taluks in the district because of the failure of the rains. Farmers in the hope of taking up early sowing of soyabeans had procured certified seeds and were waiting for the onset of the monsoon. The Agriculture Department had to procure the seeds from neighbouring districts and from farmers. As against the target of 38,000 hectares fixed for black grams, sowing has been completed only on 214 hectares. Similarly as against the target of just over 20,000 hectares, the sowing has been completed on 536 hectares. The sowing of soyabean crop has also been very low: against the target of 14,000 hectares, sowing has been completed only on 187 hectares. As per the present indications there is no possibility of farmers achieving the targets fixed for green, and black grams, sesame and soyabeans this year. The unsown area is likely to shift to red gram, for which farmers have time till the first week of August to complete the sowing, and to sunflower. The sowing of sunflower extends up to rabi season. Agriculture Department officials said so far the sowing of foodgrain crops has been completed only on 965 hectares as against the target of more than 4.55 lakh hectares fixed for the kharif season.
