Succumbing to pressure from leaders of an aggrieved Muslim community, the Rajasthan Government on Saturday decided to hand over investigation of the Gopalgarh firing in Bharatpur to the CBI.

At the same time, it also ordered a judicial probe into the incident in which eight persons were killed and 20 injured.

The Government also conceded to the demand of removing district collector Krishan Kunal and SP Hinglaz Dan for failing to assess the situation properly and take timely action.

The decision to give the case to the CBI and order a judicial inquiry was taken following resentment in the community against the local police.

After a report from State Home Minister Shanti Dhariwal, Chief Secretary S Ahmed and DGP Harish Meena, who visited the violence-torn area on Saturday, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot discussed the situation with his Ministerial colleagues.

He assured the victims of an impartial inquiry, and ordered a CBI probe and a judicial inquiry.

Though State Home Minister Dhariwal maintains that no one fell to police bullets, Muslim leaders, including Zahida Khan, Congress MLA from Kamman, alleged that most of deaths were caused by indiscriminate police firing. To prove her point, she said that all the dead belonged to Meo Muslim community.

Last evening Muslims, under the Rajasthan Muslim Forum, in the State Capital took out a procession and submitted a memorandum to the Government seeking CBI inquiry in the firing.

Meanwhile, according to intelligence reports, the alleged beating of the Maulavi of local Masjid by Gujjar community on Tuesday, spread the rumour of his death in the adjoining Meo dominated areas of Haryana. Next day about 1000 people from the community from there reached in Gopalgarh. While officials were negotiating with leaders of both the communities to sort out the land dispute, this crowed attacked the Gujjar-dominated localities of the village.

Talking to The Pioneer, Dhariwal admitted that these outside elements were in fore front when clashes between two communities started. “If police had not open fire in the air to disperse the violent crowd, situation would have worsened,” the Rajasthan Home Minister added.
