Rajasthan has failed its girl children on two counts. Not only has it failed to protect them, it has also been unsuccessful in educating them, according to the Census figures released on Monday. The child sex ratio (number of females for every 1,000 male children in 0-6 age group) has dropped sharply to 883 from 909 in 2001 and the state reports the lowest female literacy rate at 52.66%.

Expressing concern over the dismal figures, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said, “The data will guide us to improve our policies and decisions on the fronts on which we are weak, such as infant mortality rate, maternal mortality rate, literacy rate, sex ratio and health, during the 12th plan.”

While the state’s overall literacy rate has improved to 67.06% from 60.4% in 2001, at 28% the state reports the largest gap in the country in male-female literacy as against the national figure of 16.7%.

Dungarpur, Jaipur, Sikar, Rajsamand and Tonk have registered the sharpest decline in the child sex ratio.

The only district that hasn’t posted a decline is Ganganagar. At 77.48%, Kota has the highest literacy rate in the state while Jalore posts the lowest rate at 55.5%.

Kota also has the highest female literacy rate at 66.3% while Jaipur follows with 64.3% and Jhunjhunu at 61.1%. Jalore brings up the rear at 38.7%.

The overall sex ratio has also improved slightly from 921 in 2001 to 926 in 2011.

Dungarpur has posted the highest sex ratio at 990 while Dholpur has the lowest at 845.health, during the 12th plan.”
