Representatives of government institutions at a meeting on new initiatives in community health in Rajasthan at Swasthya Bhavan here on Monday said health care delivery should be strengthened in the remote areas and free treatment provided to all sections of poor and under-privileged people in the State.

The two-day meeting was presided over by State Planning Board Member and eminent neurologist Ashok Panagariya and attended by Medical and Health Department officers, principals and superintendents of medical colleges, members of Indian Medical Association and delegates from voluntary groups.

Medical and Health Minister A. A. Khan addressing the meeting said the State, having achieved first rank in implementation of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), would take a unique initiative for providing medicines free of cost to all patients visiting government hospitals from October 2 this year.

Mr. Khan said the health care services had registered a “significant improvement” with the initiation of the Chief Minister's Life Saving Fund, Kaleva Yojana, medical mobile units, emergency ambulance service, health awareness yatras and Priyadarshini Yojana as well as strict implementation of laws against sex-selective abortions.

The Minister said his department was trying hard to bring down the birth rate and maternal and infant mortality ratios as part of population control measures. He emphasised the need for community participation in all activities on the health care front and said institutional deliveries should be encouraged among all sections of population.

Dr. Panagariya called for bringing about “behavioural changes” among both urban and rural communities for effective delivery of health care services. He said medicos and para-medical staff in the rural areas should regularly visit different areas and stay in touch with the communities to improve institutional services.

Principal Medical and Health Secretary B. N. Sharma said the family welfare activities must get the highest priority in government medical institutions and the visitors should be encouraged to join the State Government's efforts for population control.

Among others, NRHM Director Samit Sharma, Director (Reproductive & Child Health) M. L. Jain, Director (AIDS) P. K. Sharda, Additional Director (Information, Education & Communication) V. S. Bankawat, Additional Director (Health System Development) Rashmi Sharma and Additional Director (Rural Health) B. R. Meena attended the meeting.
