Ration at your doorstep project has proved a hit in Pune district, with nearly 44 villages benefiting from this system. State Food and Civil Supply Minister Anil Deshmukh had launched the scheme under a novel initiative of revamping Public Distribution System (PDS) in the state. The government had earlier received flak for the poor flow of PDS. The minister had announced the method to curb black marketing and plug loopholes in the old PDS.

Pune which started the system has extended it to 44 villages and in this month they would want to reach out to another 50 villages. “We have successfully managed reaching ration to the doorstep for about 44 villages and now we aim at 50 more in this month,” said district supply officer Ravi Kulkarni.

The local revenue officers assess the quantity of food grains required, collect the money and then disburse the goods in the gram sabha. According to officers from the public distribution department at the mantralaya the project has been successful in eliminating fake beneficiaries and siphoning of food grains since shop owners can not store food grains in their shop.

The Pune district administration has decided to keep villagers informed about the stock of foodgrains that is being sent to different public distribution system (PDS) outlets in rural areas and the administration has roped in Magnum Opus to carry out the SMS system as well as finalised the software.

The move is aimed at preventing black marketing of food grain and kerosene by PDS shop owners in the open market.
