The second wife of a realty firm managing director, on the run for months for being part of a housing hoax that deprived hundreds of Jharkhand residents of crores, surprised investigators today by surrendering in the court of a judicial magistrate.

Anamika Nandi, the second wife of Sanjeevani Buildcon Private Limited managing director and prime accused J.D. Nandi, turned up at the court of S. Kumar around 11.30am and dramatically flung off her black veil before running into the magistrate’s chamber where she surrendered to evade arrest.

She was sent to Birsa Munda Central Jail half an hour later.

Around 240 complaints have already been lodged by people who had spent their hard-earned money to buy plots, bungalows or flats offered by the realty firm, projects which turned out to be either non-existent or on land without proper papers.

In April last year, the lid was off on the dubious deals offered by Sanjeevani, and to a lesser extent another realty firm Samriddhi Creative, fuelling public outrage and prompting chief minister Arjun Munda to order a no-holds-barred crackdown to bring the fugitives to book.

A month later, Nandi’s first wife Aneeta, also a director, was arrested. The number of FIRs filed so far in the scam is inching closer to the 250 mark.

With Anamika’s dramatic reappearance, of the four persons believed to have masterminded the housing hoax — Nandi, his two wives Aneeta and Anamika, and Shyam Kishore Gupta — the two women are behind bars and the men are absconding.

Investigators, who had tracked Anamika’s phone to Thailand, believe the other two accused, directors J. D. Nandi and Gupta, would follow her, but weren’t willing to hazard a guess when.

“Honestly, it was a surprise today. But with the kind of pressure we were building up, options are narrowing down for them. This means we are working in the right direction,” said investigating officer Arvind Kumar Sinha.

The police, he said, had filed relevant papers in court to seek her remand. “We are expecting to get it tomorrow afternoon after which we will be able to track down J.D. Nandi and Gupta,” he claimed.

Sinha revealed that till last week, Anamika’s phone was traced to Thailand while that of her husband’s to Malaysia. “The status is the same. This proves that both were together. A week ago, she switched off her phone and moved back to India and Ranchi to surrender. It’s a calculated move by them to surrender one by one,” he said.

The police believe J.D. Nandi was still in Malaysia as per his phone trace.

What was it that pushed Anamika to finally surrender?

“We moved court to permanently attach property of all the accused and freeze all possible bank accounts. The idea was to try and block all avenues for conducting financial transactions. Probably this is compelling them to come out of hiding,” the police officer said.
