Cuttack: The number of dengue patients in SCB Medical College and Hospital here crossed the 200 mark today, with many of them being minors.

While 211 patients are now under treatment in dengue wards, eight others admitted in two ICUs, hospital sources said.

Looking at the inflow of dengue patients, the hospital authorities converted yet another floor of Trauma Care Center into dengue ward and opened an exclusive dengue ICU having six beds. With this, three floors of Trauma Care Center are now filled with dengue patients.

"Seeing the rising trend of dengue cases this season, it is presumed the disease would assume greater proportion in coming days," said a doctor of the Hospital.

The Hospital authorities have requisitioned more doctors to exclusively treat these patients. Apart from the five individual professors of the medicine department, who are treating these cases along with their unit members, the authorities have deputed 15 PG students and four assistant surgeons here to share the load.

It is clear that dengue is now assuming threatening proportions in neighbouring districts of Cuttack like Khurda, Jajpur, Angul, Dhenkanal and Balasore. While as many as 50 patients here are now from Jajpur, 34 are from Angul, 20 from Dhenkanal, 18 from Khurda and 13 from Balasore.

However, there is a marked improvement in the number of cases reported from Cuttack district. Only 25 patients in the Hospital are now from Cuttack district and 10 are from the city itself.

Sources said 48 new dengue patients were admitted in the Hospital during the past 24 hours while 39 patients were discharged from here during the same period.

The Hospital till date has tested 10, 513 blood samples in this year, of which 3042 are tested positive to the two types of tests to ascertain presence of dengue virus, the sources said.
