Forest officials at Manas National Park will send samples of body parts suspected to be that of a rhino to the Forensic Science Laboratory.

The body parts were spotted yesterday near Rupahi camp of Bhuyanpara range of the national park when forest staff were on patrol duty.

The highly decomposed carcass had been lying at the spot for more than two weeks.

“Samples have been collected. These are suspected to be that of a rhino,” Prabhat Basumatary, a veterinary official in Manas, said.

The samples of bone and skull will be sent to Forensic Science Laboratory, Guwahati, on Monday for examination.

“There are still contradictory reports. We are not in a position to say anything now. Chief conservator of forests (wildlife) S.P. Singh has been sent to inquire,” chief wildlife warden Suresh Chand said.

Singh went to the spot and inspected the place where the body parts were found.

A forest official said only 10 of the 11 rhinos were spotted today. A few of them have been radio collared, which helps the forest authorities track them.

The first batch of rhinos was translocated from Pobitora in 2008 to Manas to restock Manas with rhinos.

“If it is a rhino then it is a bad news because the danger tag on Manas was just removed after years of hard work,” a forest official said.

The translocations have been done under the aegis of Indian Rhino Vision 2020 — a joint project of the Assam government and WWF-India, supported by the International Rhino Foundation and the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
