New Delhi: Congress today blamed BJP-ruled civic bodies for rise in dengue and malaria cases in the city, saying the vector-borne diseases are spreading due to inefficiency of municipalities.

Congress legislature party spokesperson Mukesh Sharma accused the three civic bodies of failing to contain spread of the diseases.

"The three BJP-ruled civic bodies have been sleeping and are not taking cognisance of the presence of dengue and other water and vector-borne diseases. This reflects negligence by the civic bodies," Sharma said.

Dengue cases in the national capital inched towards the century mark today with the reporting of ten fresh cases. With this, the total number of dengue cases have risen to 98 from yesterday's 88.

Last year, the capital saw 216 cases of dengue, including eight originating from outside, and three deaths. In 2010, there were 4,108 cases, including 24 from outside, and five deaths while the figures for 2009 were 29 cases and no deaths. In 2008, there were 550 dengue cases and two deaths.
