Row over GM rice

Close on the heels of the protests over the commercial introduction of Bt brinjal in the country, reports of field trials for a genetically modified (GM) variety of rice in West Bengal has sparked another controversy.

A group of scientists held a press conference here on Thursday strongly protesting the development after media reports emerged about the decision of the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) to grant permission to the Calcutta University for a field trial of GM rice at the State government's Rice Research Station in Chinsurah in Hooghly district.

“We are protesting this development at this stage because it is far easier to stop a risky thing like this in the beginning stages,” said Dr. Tushar Chakraborty, assistant director at the Gene Regulation department of the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology.

However, the details of the prospective field trials are shrouded in mystery as the name of the researcher and the source of the project funding are not known.

State Agriculture Minister Naren Dey told The Hindu that researchers of the Calcutta University had approached the government for land for conducting research on a variety of rice developed at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in Manila, Philippines.

Asked about the government's stand on the matter, as it had firmly opposed the introduction of Bt Brinjal, Mr. Dey said: “The project is being done by the Calcutta University, not the government.”

University authorities, however, have distanced themselves from the project.

This is not an official project of the Calcutta University. An individual researcher may be personally involved in it, said Dr. Dhruba Jyoti Chattopadhyay, Pro Vice Chancellor of the University.

Scientists at the IRRI have developed a variety where the rice grain itself is rich in iron content and the nutrient is not lost in the polishing process in rice mills.

The research is being carried out behind closed doors and there is no chance of a genetic contamination, Mr. Dey said.
