Mumbai: Even as the deadline nears for the implementation of the Right to Education Act on March 31, schools have not yet begun admissions for the 25% quota seats.

Reason? They are waiting for the RTE notification for 2013-14, which has been pending for the last three months.

Realising that they have to wait for a fresh notification for admissions to 25% quota for 2013-14, the education department withdrew the common timetable released by the former director of primary school education, Shreedhar Salunkhe, in December last year.

With the school education minister Rajendra Darda and the secretary for school education and sports, JS Saharia, out on foreign trips, there is no sign of the new notification yet.

“We cannot do anything unless a new notification for the RTE admissions is issued. Based on the notification, education inspectors will have to brief the school managements about the plan of action. It’s not something that will be completed within a few days,” said NB Chavan, deputy director of school education.

Schools are worried that this year too they would be forced to rush through their admission process. “Last year, we were forced to complete the admission process in a haphazard way. We did not have enough time to publicise our seats and so we got very few applications from students of the weaker sections,” said the principal of a reputed school in Byculla, on condition of anonymity. “This year, the government promised that it would be more organised and inform us in advance. But it looks like a repeat of last year.”

According to AD Kale, project director, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, the new timetable would be issued after a new notification is released.

“After we get a new notification, only then can we formulate a new timetable for all schools. The timetable issued in December was wrong because the new notification had not yet been issued. We are hoping that there would not be many changes in it,” he said.
