RTI Activist's Father Calls For CBI Probe in Son's Murder

Bhikhalal Jethva, father of slain RTI activist Amit Jethva who was shot dead in July, today filed a petition in the Gujarat High Court demanding a probe by CBI or any other independent agency into the death of his son.

Bhikhalal, in his petition, has alleged that since BJP MP from Junagadh Dinu Solanki was behind the killing of Jethva and independent and impartial investigation was not being done by the city crime branch investigating the case.

He has sought transfer of the case to an independent investigating agency, preferably CBI or Special Investigation Team comprising of IPS officers of other state cadre.

Justice Akil Kureshi, hearing the petition, ordered that the matter be heard by a division bench headed by the Chief Justice which has been hearing the public interest litigation (PIL) against illegal mining in Gir forest region filed by Jethva before his death.

In the PIL, Jethva had alleged Solanki was involved in illegal mining in the Gir forest region.

Since the division bench has asked for a detailed report on the death of Jethva and is aware of the facts that led to his killing, it would be better if the PIL and Bhikhalal's petition are heard together, the court said.

Jethva was shot dead by two assailants near the Gujarat High Court on July 20.

Bhikhalal had also alleged that he and his son had received a number of threats from Solanki, who was a three- time MLA from Kodinar constituency before he won the Lok Sabha polls last year from Junagadh.

Enumerating the reasons for seeking a probe by an independent agency like CBI in the matter, Bhikhalal, in his petition, said since Solanki was member of ruling BJP he was very powerful and could influence the probe.

"The arrest of Solanki could disturb many equations among the police, politicians, bureaucracy and some cement companies that are involved in illegal mining in Junagadh district," he alleged.

Bhikhalal said he did not have trust in the city crime branch probing the case as some of its past members have been implicated in fake encounter killing cases like that of Sohrabuddin Sheikh.

The city crime branch has so far arrested four persons, including Solanki's nephew Pratap alias Shiva Solanki. But the agency has so far maintained that there was no link between Jethva's murder and Dinu Solanki.

According to the crime branch, Shiva had agreed to finance the contract killing of Jethva.

Bhikhalal has made Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi one of the respondents in his petition.
