NEW DELHI: RTI activists led by Aruna Roy will boycott PM Narendra Modi's inaugural speech at the Central Information Commission's annual convention on Friday to protest against the exclusion of several RTI users and activists from the event citing security concerns.

Only a handful of activists including Nikhil Dey, Lokesh Batra, Venkatesh Nayak, Anjali Bhardwaj and Shekhar Singh have been invited for the convention. Traditionally, civil society representatives form a significant delegation along with state information commissioners, lawyers, jurists, members of the executive and media.

"We have resolved that members of the NCPRI who have received invitations (and have not as yet been uninvited) will not attend the inaugural session. We will use the RTI to probe the sequence of events and will fight to establish the independence and pro-people democratic mandate of the CIC," National Campaign for the People's Right to Information (NCPRI) said in a resolution passed on Thursday.

The activists also complained about "background checks'' by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) for verification. "Many were sent an email that they were not being invited to the convention due to security reasons. Every year since 2006, the PM of the day has addressed the convention and there have never been these kinds of restrictive measures,'' the activists said.

Commenting on the stand taken by the activists Chief Information Commissioner Vijai Sharma said, "Why should there be a boycott because of security? We have made every endeavour to involve all interests, stakeholders and experts. There is no reason for boycott."
