In an effort to unburden children, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan has laid down stringent weight norms for school bags carried by students. KVS has asked its schools to maintain the lowest school bag weight of less than two kg for students in Classes 1 and 2 with the highest bag weight, six kg, allowed for those studying in Classes 8 to 12. KVS has directed the principals of its schools to ensure these weight norms are followed. As per the directive, apart for the classes already mentioned above, the school bags of children studying in Classes 3 and 4 should be less than 3 kg. The prescribed weight is less than four kg for children in Classes 5, 6 and 7 while the upper limit is six kg for those studying in Classes 8 to 12.

The directive is likely to provide relief to lakhs of students in about 1,000 Kendriya Vidyalayas across the country and abroad. This is not the first time that the issue of heavy schools bags has been brought to the fore. Eminent writer R.K. Narayan had drawn the country’s attention to overburdened students in a moving speech in the Rajya Sabha a few years ago.

The KVS circular states that it is a violation of a child’s rights to place the burden of a school bag on his back that is disproportionate to his age and health. "The school system can be charged with cruelty to children," it adds.

Steps include starting the practice of single note books and not compelling students to bring all text books daily. "A child should not carry more than one-fifth of his body weight on his back to keep the spine and skeletal structure strong and upright," the directive states. Several suggestions have been put forth by KVS to bring down the weight of school bags. The suggestions include maintaining a homework time table, discouraging dependence on books, provision of lockers for students and making potable water available in schools to reduce the necessity of carrying a water bottle.
