Citi Centre of Financial Literacy, housed in the SEWA-promoted Indian School of Microfinance for Women  (ISMW), plans to train children in rural areas to open bank accounts across the country. The centre also plans to teach children the fundamentals of saving and the utilisation of financial resources. It aims to collaborate with the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance for this initiative.

"We are planning to build a rural cadre of children, where we can teach them how to open bank accounts and also guide them on the utilisation of resources. We will build teams across villages to spread financial literacy across the country. We have started with Gujarat by training 1,000 children and plan to take the initiative to other states," said ISMW managing trustee and executive director Jayshree Vyas on the sidelines of celebrations to mark the success of providing financial literacy to 5 lakh women in India through the centre's specially designed module.

The centre targets to reach another 5 lakh women by 2011.

Ahmedabad-based ISMW is promoted by SEWA Bank, Friends of Women's World Banking (FWWB) and Coady International Institute, Canada with core funding from Citi Foundation.
