Ranchi: The state brass today urged Jairam Ramesh to increase the wages under the Centre's flagship Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).

The demand was placed before the Union rural development minister, who was on a daylong visit to Ranchi, at a review meeting of rural projects at Sri Krishna Sinha Institute of Public Administration (SKIPA).

"We have requested the Union minister to increase the daily wages for MGNREGS workers, which is only Rs 138 at present. The state offers a daily minimum wage of Rs 155 as notified by the labour department a couple of months back," chief secretary R.S. Sharma, who attended the meeting along with other officials, told The Telegraph.

Wage hike apart, the issue of timely payment to rural workers was also discussed.

Ramesh, who attended a number of programmes throughout the day, spent maximum time at the SKIPA meeting that continued from 2pm to 6pm. The Congress leader also took stock of schemes like Indira Awas Yojana, National Rural Livelihood Mission, skill development and watershed development programmes.

According to sources, Ramesh directed the state officials to implement integrated rural development models in a total of 259 panchayats across as many blocks of different districts.

"The idea is to launch various programmes simultaneously in a bid to usher in a sea change in panchayats concerned. The officials have been told to identify the panchayats by July this year," a source said.

Besides the chief secretary, governor's advisers Madhukar Gupta and K. Vijay Kumar, development commissioner A.K. Sarkar, joint secretaries in the Union ministry of rural development Rajesh Bhushan and T. Vijay Kumar, state rural development department's principal secretary R.S. Poddar, MGNREGS commissioner of the state Arun, special secretaries Paritosh Upadhyaya and B Nijlingappa were present at the meeting.

So were deputy commissioners and deputy development commissioners of different districts.

Otherwise very vocal, Ramesh did not make any comment on the political scenario in the state in the wake of reports that the Congress high command was toying with the idea of forming a government in the state, which is under President's Rule since January.

In the evening, Ramesh attended a party function at the Congress state headquarters. While addressing party leaders and supporters, the minister is learnt to have told them to prepare a roadmap that will be executed in the next three months in all 81 Assembly constituencies of the state.

He also promised to visit Jharkhand regularly.
