AHMEDABAD: A major hurdle in increasing the height of Sardar Sarovar dam on Narmada river from the present 121.92 metres to 138.64 metres has been cleared.

Both Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh governments said during a meeting convened by Union government's department of social justice on Thursday that the process of rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) has been completed in their respective regions and that they have no objection if the height of the dam was raised.

Despite getting an environmental clearance two years ago, in January 2010 the Gujarat government could not raise the dam height because of about 400 project-affected families in Maharashtra.

It was unanimously decided by all the four states and central government to recommend to the Narmada Control Authority that the height of the dam should be raised. After this major breakthrough, water resources ministry will call a meeting of all the stakeholders and a final approval will be given in near future.

The R&R Committee of the Narmada Control Authority (NCA) had asked to resolve the issue before getting the final clearance for increasing the dam height, which was the main road block.

A senior official said the state government will be able to provide water to the planned command area - about 18 lakh hectares - once the final clearance to raise the dam height comes. It would take about 30 months to increase the dam's height to 138 metres, he said.

At present Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd command area is just 5.4 lakh hectare as against the promised 18.06 lakh hectare. The other major challenge before the government is to complete the canal network, as sufficient water is not reaching arid regions of North Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutch.

A senior official said the committee has approved the action taken report submitted by Gujarat, Maharashtra and MP and found it satisfactory.

"The committee will submit today's meeting minutes to the NCA shortly. The NCA has kept a meeting for reviewing the R&R committee's report on July 2 in Indore. After NCA accepts our recommendation, it will grant final permission."
