If you plan to go to Potka from Ranchi you will have to go through Jamshedpur. The Potka Block is situated around 200 kilometer from Ranchi and 75 kilometers from Jamshedpur.

The area is mainly inhabited by people of Sabbar tribe which is on the verge of extinction. The Indian government is making all out efforts to confront the delicate situation. The responsibility to do the work was given to Bharat Seva Sangh, Jamshedpur. In 1990, the Sangh constructed houses for 10 families. But later, eight families returned to their original jungle habitats.

Undeterred by the initial setback, the government persevered in its effort to bring back the Sabars to the mainstream. As a result, today, 80 homes house 200 Sabar families live happily while pursuing normal ways of livelihood.

Earlier they would avoid outsiders but the new generation is comfortable with all. Bharat Seva Sangh has made a school for them here in Sabbar Nagar, as the village is known. Meals are also provided. The Sangh has facilitated farming and the Sabars are no longer dependent on the jungles.

Bharat Seva Sangh authorities believe that the only way to stop these people from venturing into jungles is to provide them employment opportunities. The Sangh plans to provide them jobs round the year so that they may improve their primitive lifestyle and living standards. elevate their living standard.

The Sangh provides training to Sabar women in spinning yarn and weaving cloth. Products like towel, bed sheets are sold through the Sangh and the proceeds add up to about Rs One thousand per trainee worker. Due to the efforts of the Sangh, the life style of this endangered tribe has improved.

The Sangh’s efforts has ensured the spread of education among the Sabars. A case in point is that of Chunu Ram Sabar, who, after completing his intermediate course, is running a school here.
