The queries pertain to the safeguards in place to check state surveillance, the extent to which state surveillance is justified and seek suggestions on how to strengthen cyber security and balance individual rights with national security interests.

New Delhi: The expert committee appointed by the Supreme Court to probe the alleged use of Pegasus spyware against journalists, opposition politicians, judges and others, has sought comments from the public on 11 queries pertaining to the issue until March 31, the Hindustan Times reported.

The committee, led by former Supreme Court Justice R.V. Raveendran, was set up on October 27 last year after the top court noted that in the absence of any “specific denial” of the use of Pegasus by the Union government, the court had no option but to set up an independent committee to probe the matter.

The three-member technical committee that is advising the investigation includes Naveen Kumar Chaudhary, professor of cyber security and digital forensics and dean of the National Forensic Sciences University at Gandhinagar, Gujarat; Prabaharan P., professor at the School of Engineering at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in Kerala; and Ashwin Anil Gumaste, Institute Chair Associate Professor of computer science and engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.
