The Supreme Court on Monday sought a detailed status report from the Andhra Pradesh government on the investigations into the alleged fake encounter of senior Maoist leader Azad.

A bench comprising Justice Aftab Alam and Justice R M Lodha told AP's counsel and senior advocate Altaf Ahmed that the court "does not want even an iota of doubt in this matter". It asked the state to place the probe status report by April 15, the next date of hearing.

It was hearing petitions filed by social activist Swami Agnivesh and the widow of a journalist who was killed along with Azad.

Andhra Pradesh police had killed 58-year-old Azad aka Cherukuri Rajkumar, a senior leader of banned CPI (Maoist) Central Committee, and 32-year-old journalist Hemchandra Pandey in an encounter on the night of July 1 last year in Adilabad district bordering Maharashtra. The government had announced a reward of Rs 12 lakh to anyone who got Azad dead or alive.

The bench, while issuing notices to the Centre and the state government, had earlier said, "We cannot allow the republic killing its own children. The governments will have to answer many questions."

The petitioners had showed postmortem reports of Azad and Pandey to accuse the police of killing them in a fake encounter and demanded an impartial probe by a sitting judge.

The petitioners added that a conglomerate of human rights bodies, Coordination of Democratic Rights Organisations, had inquired into the incidents and alleged that both, Azad and scribe, were shot from close range by the Andhra Pradesh police.
