‘51 Wayanadan Karshika Vijayagathakal' released

KALPETTA (Kerala): ‘51 Wayanadan Karshika Vijayagathakal,' a book on 51 farmers who have scripted success sagas in farming activities in the district, written by N. Anilkumar, Director, M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, and Joseph John, a scientist with the Foundation, was released by N.S. Sajikumar, District Development Manager, NABARD, at a function here recently.

The book details the innovative agriculture practices, which are economically viable and ecologically sustainable, adopted by the 51 farmers.

All the farmers consider agriculture as an entrepreneurship activity and explain the farming operations from ‘seed to seed,' which include marketing strategies as well.

Nine agriculture operations on crop husbandry such as cultivation of pepper, coffee, cardamom, paddy, banana, mushroom, tuber crops, flowers, and fruits as well as four animal husbandry practices, including dairy, fishery, apiary, and rabbit farming are discussed in the book.

Apart from this, integrated farming, and soil and water conservation programmes are also included.

The experiences of farmers who have succeeded in zero budget natural farming to modern agriculture options such as precision farming are highlighted in the book.

Fruit of research

The 312-page book was the result of over one-and-a-half year of comprehensive survey and discussion with farmers in different parts of the district, Dr. Anilkumar said.

The book was an attempt to throw light into the secrets behind the success of farmers who had spent at least 10 years in agriculture, Mr. Joseph John said.

Methodology adopted by the farmers in seed selection, seed storage, planting, fertilizer application, pest and disease management, harvesting, post-harvest processing and marketing were discussed in it, he said. The farmers were selected after a survey conducted in 25 grama panchayats and a municipality in the district.

The address and phone numbers of the farmers are given.
