The NCRB report states that 176 cases were registered across the country in the “offences against the state” category in 2014.

Ranchi: ACCORDING TO the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, Jharkhand recorded the highest number of sedition cases in 2014. However, according to the Jharkhand Police, not a single sedition case was filed that year.

The NCRB report states that 176 cases were registered across the country in the “offences against the state” category in 2014. These included 47 cases registered under Section 124-A (sedition) — Jharkhand topped the list with 18 cases, while Bihar came second (16 cases). Five cases were reported in Kerala, two each in West Bengal and Odisha, and one case each in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh.

However, Jharkhand Police officials said their records do not match the NCRB data. According to information collected by the CID from the districts, the state had no cases of sedition registered in 2014.

Confirming this, Inspector General (CID) Sampat Meena said the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB) was entrusted with the task of compiling the data, which was then sent to the NCRB.

Official sources in the SCRB, which is currently in the process of compiling data for 2015, said that according to their data for 2014, there were 14 cases.

“Our data says that there were 14 cases of sedition, all reported from Palamu district. We only get the figures, and not the details of these cases. Therefore, this figure will have to be checked from the district concerned,” said a senior SCRB official who did not want to be named.

When contacted, Palamu Superintendent of Police Mayur Patel said: “There are no such cases in the district. It appears that somewhere along the line, something has got misquoted.”

DIG (Palamu) Saket Kumar Singh added: “I have not come across any such data during my tenure here over the last six months or so.”
Singh said it was possible that the cases may have been listed under the wrong head. “One may be forced to look at the entire data once again to see if some mistake has occurred. But, as of now, there are no such cases,” he said.

Jharkhand Police spokesperson and Additional Director General (Operations) S N Pradhan could not be reached for comment.
