Jaipur: Frequent snags in the server of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) have led to disruption in the distribution of food grains through the fair price shops in Rajasthan resulting in many violent incidents in the state. The state government has sought the help of the Union food ministry to take up the matter with UIDAI.

Dr Subodh Agarwal, principal secretary, food and consumer affairs of Rajasthan, in a letter to Union food and consumer affairs secretary Brinda Swaroop pointed out that as per the end-to-end computerization of the PDS shops in state, 24,873 fair price shops have point of sale (POS) machines installed and efforts are on bring the remaining shops under the computerization programme.

He pointed out that in May this year in Rajasthan 97 lakh National Food Security Act (NFSA) 2016 beneficiaries and 44 lakh NFSA 2013 beneficiaries were distributed food grains using POS machines.

However, due to the frequent failures of the UIDAI server, food grain distribution through POS machines was adversely affected in the absence of biometric identification resulting in violent incidents like fair price shops owners being manhandled and destruction of machines at many places. Such incidents were reported in Sirohi and Bharatpur districts last month.

He said that incidents of severe failure were reported in June 14, 15 and 16. This has caused serious inconvenience to the fair price shops owners as well as the beneficiaries. He expressed apprehension that frequent glitches would hamper the end-to-end computerization programme of the PDS system in the state.

The state government has requested the Union food secretary to take up the matter with the department concerned so that the public distribution system and the computerization programme are not adversely affected.
