Haryana Chief Secretary Urvashi Gulati said on Tuesday that the State Government is committed to safeguarding the interests of the girl child and providing equal opportunities to enable them to realise their full potential in life.

Presiding over a meeting of Secretaries here, she asserted that even though the sex ratio figures of Census 2011 for Haryana which show an increase over the previous years appeared to be a ray of hope, still a lot more had to be done.

She also emphasised the need for mass social awakening to bring about a change of heart and a change of the mind set to further improve the child sex ratio. She claimed that the overall sex ratio had been improved as the State has recorded the highest sex ratio of 877 females per 1,000 males since 1901.It was 861 females per 1,000 males in the 2001 Census.

Citing the provisional figures, she added that Haryana was one of the nine states in which the child sex ratio (0-6 years) had shown an increasing trend. It has been recorded as 830 compared to 819 per 1,000 males in 2001.

Meanwhile, addressing a press conference, Director Census Operations Neerja Shekhar said that Haryana had recorded a decadal population growth of 19.90 per cent during 2001-11 as compared to 28.43 per cent in the previous decade of 1991-2001. The State recorded a population density of 573 per square km in 2001-11 as compared to 478 in 1991-2001.
